Product details
Thermoplastic elastomer TPE has been gradually applied in food packaging, kitchenware, baby tableware, baby products and other industries in recent years. Accordingly, the number of users consulting food-grade TPE has increased in recent years. Customers usually ask if there is any food-grade TPE, but it is not clear about the specific food-grade testing requirements.
As a matter of fact, the testing methods (or standards) for TPE are different in different countries and regions. China is GB, and the EU's universal standard is EC/1935/2004 standard EN1186. However, within the EU, there are differences among different countries, such as Germany is LFGB and France is French DGCC RF 2004-64. In addition, the United States is FDA(21CFR.177.2600), and Japan is different.
The above food-level testing standards are most commonly FDA food-level standards in the United States. In addition, food-level tests in different countries and regions need to conform to local food-level standards if customers have specified requirements. Currently, almost all TPE products cannot pass the tests for TPE food-level tests, n-hexane products tested by FDA and olive oil products tested by LFGB. It is said that TPE of some imported brands can pass these two tests, but the price is also very expensive. Other food-grade tests related to TPE, such as distilled water test, 50% alcohol test, 3% acetic acid test, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and content (VOM), etc., can be passed by TPE with appropriate TPE blending system.
As a reply to whether customers have food-grade TPE, it depends on the specific food-grade test requirements, TPE that has passed FDA n-hexane (and other similar tests) and TPE that has passed LFGB test. This material is hard to find, and TPE basically fails. TPE can pass other food-grade test standards.
A new TPE material product application is very important for communication and confirmation of various requirements of materials. For environmental protection testing, if the downstream customers of the user do not provide detailed standards for what kind of food-level testing standards are required, the user should know what products he/she makes and what specific testing requirements he/she has for TPE materials, or communicate with the downstream customers for confirmation, and then communicate with the suppliers for confirmation. At present, there are some TPE application cases in the industry. Although in principle the FDA standard test of TPE requires n-hexane, for specific products, the food-level test level required by the material can be analyzed according to the actual product application requirements. For example, for some products, TPE materials do not need to be in direct contact with or contain beverages and oily foods, then the requirements for TPE for such products are not so high, and it may not be necessary to conduct n-hexane test, but only need to pass distilled water test. Of course, customers have rigid and clear requirements, which is another matter.
As for the price of food-grade TPE, if it exceeds the standard FDA and LFGB, this kind of material is relatively scarce, and the price is normal at 40~60 yuan. General food grade TPE, 15~35 yuan TPE is ok, but the specific price needs specific analysis of material environmental testing and physical properties application requirements!
